The man who was arrested last Friday for allegedly raping a two-year-old has made his first appearance in court.
Sizwe Yende (28) of Spearville in Emjindini appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on a charge of rape on Monday.
Yende is alleged to have committed the crime at Rimer’s Creek Park last Friday at around 16:00.
It is alleged that Yende lured the child from Shoprite Supermarket to the park where he allegedly raped her.
The child apparently went to Shoprite in the company of her parents from
where Yende lured her away.
After her parents couldn’t find her, they became worried and looked for her all over the shop.
Later they requested Shoprite management to review the CCTV cameras in an effort to trace the toddler’s whereabouts.
A worker at the shop told Barberton Times that the camera footage showed the child exiting the shop with a man, who was later identified as Yende.
The child’s parents and community members began to search for her. She was discovered around 19:00 at the stream in Rimer’s Creek Park. She was unconscious and was rushed to Barberton General Hospital from where she was later transferred to Rob Ferreira Hospital.
During his appearance it emerged that Yende was facing multiple charges of the rape of minors.
Magistrate Tsake Ussinga postponed his case to today (Wednesday, October 14) for formal bail application.
Yende was remanded in custody.
