According to the Mbombela Local Municipality, the Crocodile River has stopped flowing downstream and abstraction restrictions will be implemented to enable it to reach the Mozambican border. This is needed in order to meet the domestic needs downstream, the municipality’s international obligations and the environmental sustainability of the river.
Restrictions will apply to all municipal abstractions from the Crocodile River, which includes White River, Mbombela, KaNyamazane, Malalane and Komatipoort.
Residents are urged to stop watering their gardens and to reduce their water usage. The municipality stated that they will halt the watering of municipal open grounds and gardens until further notice.
“We further urge all users in our municipalities to assist in spreading this message to all and take this situation as critical,” a press release read.
