Deplorable conditions of D737 are a concern

"The potholes are just too many and are increasing by the day. If nothing is done urgently, parts of the road may soon become ponds."

STEELPORT – It looks like it will take years for the government to finally ensure good roads with no potholes all over Tubatse.

Local residents have expressed their concern about the deplorable condition of the D737 from Steelpoort to Lydenburg. According to most of the residents, the road is dilapidated and abandoned.

Mr Fanie Nel, a farmer in the area, said it had become so bad to the extent that motorists always avoided using it and resorted to the R37 which is a longer route.

“Look at the deep holes next to Olifantspoortjie, they are deepening more and more and with heavy rain, the road may collapse before long.”

Another resident, Mr Tshepo Matha, said the D737 “is bad and needs urgent intervention by government”.

“The potholes are just too many and are increasing by the day. If nothing is done urgently, parts of the road may soon become ponds.”

People complained about the contractor and the Limpopo Government for revamping a portion of the road from Steelpoort to the Olifantspoortjie Guest House. “Only 10 kilometres of the D737 were revamped, the rest looked like a gravel road. This is just a shady job, we plead with those responsible to fix it entirely,” they said.

The Greater Tubatse Municipality’s (GTM) spokesman Mr Thabiso Mokoena said the route did not fall under under GTM.

“We are not responsible for the contract, that is a national road,” he said and referred Steelburger/Lydenburg News to the Road Agency of Limpopo (RAL). At the time of going to print, the paper had not received a response from RAL.
