Comment period on highway’s impact underway

The comment period on the draft final environmental-impact assessment report for the controversial P166 "highway" slated to pass through or close by White River, is currently underway.

Residents are urged to read the draft final environmental-impact assessment report for the P166 road and send their comments in writing to johan.blignaut@rhdhv.com or paul.dacruz@rhdvh.com or consult with the White River Ratepayers Association, which keeps a close eye on the project.

Hard copies of the report are available at the library, while the electronic copy can be downloaded from Royal Haskoning DHV’s website (click here).

The 21-days comment period will come to an end at close of business on November 16.

The road was brought to the attention of residents in June, when a public meeting was held regarding the environmental impact its construction would have on the area.

P166 is slated to either run through the wetlands in town or past Uplands College, depending on which is more feasible.

The safety of residents, the protection of several endangered indigenous fauna and wetlands, as well as the impact on the town’s economy were some of the issues that were highlighted.
