A security guard was killed and another wounded during an attempted robbery at Up-Right Sawmill on the R40 on October 24.
According to the security guard on duty, he spotted two men hiding behind a truck parked on the premises. He alerted two of his colleagues that had already gone off duty and the three went out to confront the suspects.
Upon being discovered hiding by timber, the suspects fired shots and wounded one of the guards.
The other two guards fled and tried to barricade themselves in one of their rooms, but were chased by the suspects and dragged out again.
The suspects demanded chainsaws and fired more shots. Another security guard was wounded and later died in hospital.
