Umjindi taking part in Cleanest Town Competition

The aim of the GMC was to promote improved service delivery that restored community pride and commitment in caring for the environment. It also focused on improved integrated sustainable-development strategies in municipalities.

Umjindi Local Municipality director of community services, Comfort Makhanya, believes that the local council deserves at least one award on November 12 during the Greenest Municipality Competition (GMC) provincial awards.

The finals for the GMC, which was previously known as the Cleanest Town Competition, will be held at The Ridge Casino at eMalahleni.

Speaking to Barberton Times last Thursday after a filming crew visited the municipality to capture some of the council’s implemented national waste-management spaces, Makhanya said initiatives such as the GMC kept them on their toes in delivering adequate services to the community.

The aim of the GMC was to promote improved service delivery that restored community pride and commitment in caring for the environment. It also focused on improved integrated sustainable-development strategies in municipalities.

All 18 in the province will battle it out in various categories. ”As Umjindi Local Municipality, we are driven by the vision, mission and co-values, which are aimed at making Umjindi a jewel of the Lowveld. We want to make our town a preferred destination for all with the value of good quality work we put in to beautify it,” said Makhanya.

He added that to keep the municipality clean and a preferred destination, they were driven by three principles: Involvement of private sectors, addressing climate change and beautifying open spaces.

He said the involvement of the Barberton Environmental Centre was also a supporting element. Thobile Hlaka, Mpumalanga GMC co-coordinator said the way in which Umjindi utilised its open spaces, conducted its landscaping and beautified the area, was commendable.
