Hippopotamus killed on KNP road

Tourists were traumatised by the scene.

SKUKUZA – Tourists in the Kruger National Park (KNP) were horrified when they came across a dead hippopotamus lying on the tar road with blood seeping from its mouth and nose.

According to KNP visitor Ms Susan Du Preez Stolz’s early morning Facebook post, she  came across the dead animal at 06:30 while driving on the KNP’s  H1-2 road towards Skukuza. She described the scene as heartbreaking and speculated that a speeding truck may have hit the hippopotamus.

SANParks’ Ms Lesego Nko confirmed that the incident had been reported to the park’s management. “The preliminary investigation does not show any signs of speeding. A detailed report on what could have caused the accident will be communicated as soon as all the required information has been captured,” she said.
