Two traffic officers suspended for fraud and corruption

The mec has welcomed the pair's arrest saying the allegations against the two should be thoroughly investigated.

MBOMBELA – The impact of corrupt law enforcers on road safety is enormous taking into consideration the number of crashes that occur on the road. Therefore, those who are suspected of any mischief in traffic law enforcement should be immediately dealt with once indentified, if government is to succeed in bringing down road crashes. This is according to Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe after the suspension of two traffic officers yesterday.

The Kabokweni based officers’ suspension follow their arrest by the Hawks last week on the allegations of fraud and corruption and defeating the ends of justice.

It is believed’ that the officers may have been taking monies from some motorists during one of the operations that the department conducted last week. The officers have already appeared in Nelspruit Magistrate Court on 24 December 2015 and they were granted bail of R1500 each.

The MEC has welcomed the pair’s arrest saying that the allegations against them should be thoroughly investigated. “We should not allow corruption because if we do, we will be nullifying the efforts that other hardworking traffic officers are doing to ensure that there is effective law enforcement on the road. We cannot allow some few individuals with low levels of integrity to tarnish the image of our dedicated officers,” Shongwe said.

Meanwhile, a male motorist was arrested today for attempting to bribe traffic officers. He was arrested during an operation that took place on the N4 Toll Road near Mbombela during a roadblock.

The suspect was arrested after he attempted to give R1000 bribe to the officers who were issuing him with a fine for driving an unroadworthy tow bakkie. He was also fined for towing another vehicle while his vehicle was not registered as a tow vehicle.
