Geotrail the main attraction for visitors
She said that world heritage sites don’t come easy and that the team of local professionals that were put together by Tony Ferrar, will surely have their work cut out for them.
According to Astrid Christianson, the marketing manager of Barberton Community Tourism (BCT), they had a very good tourism month. Although many South African visitors stayed over in town, quite a number of overseas tourists also frequented Barberton. This might be due to the weak Rand.
“Our very special geology, showcased by the ever-popular Geotrail, has become the main attraction, with more and more specialised tours being requested,” said Christianson.
With the new year came the wonderful news that the funding to restart the World Heritage Site Project has been granted at long last.
“After long delays it will now be all-systems-go into the new year. When I first came to Barberton in 1973, the Viljoen brothers were busy here with their research; now they are among South Africa’s leading geologists. I met them several times and listened to their tales about the mountains and their very special rocks. Well, that is how long it has taken for our lovely mountains to finally become recognised worldwide,” said Christianson.

“At last, I can truthfully say, yes, it is happening!”
She said that although it might take many months of hard work, it was great news so early in 2016.
“I will keep the community posted on any developments. Happy New Year to all!”
