MALALANE – Strikers demanding a trade union to be allowed on the Umbhaba Estate farm have continued where they left off last year.
Former workers returned to protest action on Monday after their agreement with the farm’s management to meet with tribal leaders was suddenly rejected.
According to reports received by Corridor Gazette, nine people were arrested by police on Monday, and others were injured by rubber bullets.
They appeared in the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of public violence, malicious damage to property and assault.
They were all released on warning and were expected back in court on February 19.
Attempts to contact Umbhaba Estate were unsuccessful, as at the time of going to print no response had yet been received from the company.
Strike action is reportedly still continuing, and 25 more people had been arrested on Tuesday afternoon. They had not yet been charged at the time of going to press.
