LYDENBURG – An underprivileged pupil who performed exceptionally well in matric has been offered a bursary to further his studies by Lydenburg Smelter.
Palo Solomon Madike (18) of Mashishing High School was the top learner in his school and passed with six distinctions, namely maths, physical science, geography, life sciences, life orientation and Sepedi.
Madike will study BSc Chemical Engineering at Wits University. His bursary will cover his tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation, monthly allowances, and transport from Lydenburg to Gauteng. When he leaves for registration, accommodation will be paid until he gets a room at campus and many other expenses. He was selected after he met all the Glencore bursary selection criteria needed for a student to be assisted to further their studies.
Mr Conroy van der Westhuizen, manager of Lydenburg Smelter congratulated Mashishing High School and Madike for their hard work. “We would like to ask God to command his angels on your path so that they may prepare your way to always be safe. We will visit you just for support and we wish you well,” he said.
According to Madike, he is relieved from all his financial worries. “I am truly grateful for being awarded this great opportunity by Glencore. I am looking forward to university and knowing that all my fees will be covered all I have to do is to work hard and achieve my dreams.”
His mother, Ms Magakantshe Madike said if Lydenburg Smelter had not assisted her son with a bursary, he would have sat at home doing nothing. “I thank Lydenburg Smelter for assisting us because I could not afford to send him to university. I cannot thank it enough,” she said.
