BURGERSFORT – Celebrations were galore as Roka Malepe Royal Traditional Council chief, Kgetja Malepe (34) was sworn in by Kgoshi Phatudi Hlabirwa Sekhukhune on March 19.

This is despite traces of smouldering tension of another faction claiming the chieftaincy belonged to them. The auspicious occasion was attended by MECs of cooperative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs (CoGHSTA), fellow chiefs, Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM)’s mayor Cllr David Magabe, Limpopo provincial house of traditional leaders, departmental heads, and many dignitaries from various corners of the country.

After bestowing Malepe with her chieftaincy crown, Kgoshi Sekhukhune said she was the right person to lead the people of Maakubu.

He encouraged the new chief to take her office with great courage and determination, while leading her people with a level-headed approach.

“If you are struggling to lead your people, we are available to offer advice where possible,” Sekhukhune said.

He added that the integrity of the chief was realised by the way she attended issues brought to her attention by the people. He emphasised that as a chief, it was vital to liaise with local authorities and attended meetings. Malepe was later taken to her official residence where she was bestowed with her traditional powers, garb and tools.
