Impact from fatal crash echoes through suburb

The deceased's sister arrived at the scene about 30 minutes later. She was crying hysterically on learning that her sister had not survived the accident

MBOMBELA – Last night a woman was killed when the car she was driving collided with an oncoming vehicle at the Banket Street/R40 intersection.

Several residents from Stonehenge heard the impact of the crash at exactly 19:40 and came out of their homes to see what had transpired.

Paramedics of ER24 of which the base is at Mediclinic Nelspruit just down the road, also heard the loud bang and rushed to the scene. They found two BMWs had been involved in the accident. The driver of the white BMW – a woman in her 40s – was declared dead on the scene. It is suspected that she had sustained a broken neck and was killed on impact.

Two occupants of the silver BMW were taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Although there were eyewitnesses to the accident, officials on the scene could give no definite explanation of what might have caused the crash.

Apparently the deceased driver was busy turning right into Banket Street when the oncoming silver BMW crashed into her vehicle. One of the traffic lights at the intersection was also uprooted and debris of both vehicles and the robot lay scattered across the scene.

The deceased’s sister arrived at the scene about 30 minutes later. She was crying hysterically on learning that her sister had not survived the accident.

The slipstream from Banket Street into the R40 was closed, but otherwise traffic flow was not impacted.

None of the spokesmen for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, could be reached at the time of going to print to confirm the deceased’s particulars. However, police were at the scene and a case of culpable homicide is being investigated.
