Potatoes hit hard by increasing food prices

With the winter approaching, there is no light at the end of the tunnel of the drought.

The recent drought, caused by below normal rainfall and extreme heat, is increasingly taking its toll on food prices all over the country. What’s more, with the winter approaching, there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

To keep track of the rising food prices, Nelspruit Post has been comparing prices on selected items from the first week of February up until the first week of this month.

We found that most food items had shown an increase in price, in some cases drastically. However, this differed between specific shops.

The price of potatoes has shown a steep increase. Since the survey has started, potatoes have shown an increase of up to
33 per cent per kilogram.

Even though milk has stayed stable, you will have to cough up 30 per cent more for a dozen eggs in some stores.

It’s initial price in February started out as R23,58 and has increased to R33,98 over the past four months, showing an increase of over R10 per dozen.

In most stores, you will now have to pay between R80 and a R100 for a kilogram of meat. If you have a sweet tooth, there is some bad news for you as sugar has gone up too. A kilogram of sugar will now cost you around R17,99.

According to experts, food prices are expected to continue to rise throughout the winter.

The newspaper will continue to track developments in food prices over the next months.
