Shelter has a close shave with fire
On Tuesday afternoon a fire broke out behind Lelievlei and Lydenburg Animal Protection Shelter and Animal Rescue (Lapsar)
LYDENBURG – On Tuesday afternoon a fire broke out behind Lelievlei and Lydenburg Animal Protection Shelter and Animal Rescue (Lapsar).
Ms Cathy Schutte of Home 4 Paws and Ms Susan Schoeman of Lapsar called Steelburger/Lydenburg News in distress and asked for assistance as the fire could have reached the dog shelter. Upon the paper’s arrival flames were surrounding the shelter. Schutte and Schoeman quickly reacted and watered the grass at the fence surrounding the shelter.
The fire luckily never reached the dog cages. However, the same could not be said for the stray kittens of which Schoeman is also taking care. “We don’t know what happened to the kittens. We are not sure if they even survived the fire,” Schutte told the newspaper. On the gravel foot path leading to Lapsar a field mouse also took shelter from the flames. The exhausted little animal was picked up by Schutte and moved to the green grass at the entrance to Lapsar. The cause of the fire could not be established.
The dogs at the two shelters desperately need to be adopted. “We are also running very low on food resources and blankets, especially with winter now in full swing.”
Residents are urged to adopt some of these wonderful animals or donate any form of dog food or blankets.
