Sanca seminars to empower people with the knowledge of addiction

Find out more about substance abuse and how to help people with this problem during three seminars by experts in the field.

KOMATIPOORT – Following a growing concern regarding substance abuse and addiction in the area, Tienie Swart and a group of volunteers joined forces with Sanca Lowveld to organise three seminars on the topic.

All community members are welcome to attend and certificates will be handed out to people who register before May 31 and attend each talk. Each seminar costs R30 per person.

On June 2 from 10:00 t0 13:00, Dr Breggie Smook will present a seminar at the Gateway Community Church on phases of addiction, signs and symptoms, the cycle of addiction and will explain which factors triggers it. She will also emphasise the role of the church on prevention, intervention, support and after care, and how to deal with defence mechanisms and learn about treatment alternatives, as well as treatment programmes.

On June 3 Marina Erasmus and Dan Mpila will be at Hectorspruit Community Hall from 10:00 to 13:00, addressing not only SAPS members, but everyone interested in alcohol and drug abuse. The topic will be the brain link between anger and substance abuse and whether people can control their anger at all times or not.

They will inform people specifically on responsible drinking, self-medication, behaviour addiction to gambling and pornography, anger truths and myths, different types of aggression, and tools for anger management.

On Saturday June 4 between 10:00 and 13:00 at Komatipoort Akademie, Marina Erasmus will speak to the parents, while Elria Erasmus will attend to the children. This course will be mainly conducted in Afrikaans.

The main topics of Marina’s talk will be the era of the obedient parent, as well as drug classification, process addiction and when is your drug addiction out of control? Other subjects will include how to identify whether your child is using drugs and what to do about it.

Elria will be chatting to the youngsters on the impact working on a computer has on brain development, “I can’t party without a drink”, “It won’t happen to me”, understanding addiction, profile of a drug addict and how they can help a friend.
