Swift action by police officers leads to the arrest of five suspects
In two separate cases police officers managed to seize back stolen copper cables and illegal cigarettes with an estimated street value of R2,6 million.
LYDENBURG – Last week excellent police work led to the arrest of five suspects.
In two separate cases police officers managed to seize back stolen copper cables and illegal cigarettes with an estimated street value of R2,6 million.
Lydenburg SAPS communications officer, Capt Alfred Kayzer Moela, told the newspaper that police received information regarding the theft of copper cables in the Badfontein district on Thursday.
“Upon arrival the SAPS found the three suspects and ordered them to take them to where they were staying. In the dwelling police discovered 50 kilograms of stripped copper cables. Another 34 unstripped cables were also found under a bed in the house.”
The suspects appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday. One of them is out on R3 000 bail.
The other two remain in police custody on account of previous charges. They will appear in court again on June 22.
Last week police also pounced on suspects who were unloading illegal cigarettes in Extension 2.
Police received a tip-off regarding the two suspect’s whereabouts and managed to confiscate 13 boxes. The suspects also briefly appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court. Both suspects are from Ethiopia.
