Residents and their furry friends celebrate life
Residents and their four-legged friends participated in a 1,6-kilometre walk while socialising.
LYDENBURG – The very first CANSA Bark For Life (BFL) was held at Hoërskool Lydenburg on Thursday June 16. Residents and their four-legged friends participated in a 1,6-kilometre walk while socialising.
The event is a fund-raiser in honour of canine caregivers and was hosted by the local CANSA branch.
Canine caregivers are guide, service, rescue, therapy, police, cancer-survivor and diagnostic dogs.
BFL gave the public the chance to empower themselves through their companions and also contributed to cancer treatment.
The event started with the participants and cancer survivors sharing a meal. Afterwards the survivors were the first ones to take a walk around the field and from there the event was officially opened to all the participants.
The attendance by the public was poorer than what was expected. According to the chairman of the Lydenburg branch, Isobel Janse van Rensburg, only about 20 people participated.
“We had hoped for a better attendance and the event ended before time. Unfortunately, we will not have another BFL event next year because we will host the CANSA Relay For Life.”
Various prizes were won during the event. “The best-dressed big female is Bella, Shalene Theron’s dog; the best-dressed big male is Delgado, Gideon Mostert’s dog; the best-dressed small-dog prizes went to Gemma-Rose, Annelize Kriel’s grey Yorkshire terrier and Truida Jordaan’s Schnauzer called Shakira. The best male relayer prize went to Zeus, Lance Young’s dog and the best female relayer went Chloe, Cilla Young’s dog.”
“We want to thank the public for the attendance and our sponsors for the great support. Grub & Munch, Sterkspruit vet, Chass Everest and Kobus Pretorius (KP Music) you really helped us a lot and thank you.”
Relay For Life is an inspirational overnight fund-raising event that honours cancer survivors and celebrates life.
