Townsfolk experience joie de vivre

It was a historic moment when the very first Bastille Day festival was held at JamJar Lounge last Thursday.

LYDENBURG – “Vive la France!” These words were exclaimed during one of the most memorable events in town. It was a historic moment when the very first Bastille Day festival was held at JamJar Lounge last Thursday.

True to their word, the organisers delivered an authentic French experience which is sure to be the talk of the town. The guests were escorted to their tables and treated like royals.

The colours of the French flag dominated the area and JamJar Lounge resembled a French eatery with all the appropriate music and delicious food.

The guests enjoyed a great feast while receiving an education in French culture. Jan Neethling, a local singer, gave a great performance winning the crowds attention with his unforgettable voice.

The eight-course, French-themed dinner raised funds for local pupils who will travel abroad later this year.

They plan to leave on December 18 and will return on January 2 and will get the chance to explore many exciting places. They will start touring through Amsterdam, the Hague, S’Hertogenbosch and some of the small towns like Delft and then later through Edinburgh and Paris.

Guests wore French clothes, ate French food, sang French songs and looked happy to be part of this prestigious event.

Two well-known local chefs, Leon Roelofse and André du Preez prepared the food. The menu consisted of kir royale, escargot ravioli, soupe à l’oignon, le trou normand, canard avec sauce cerises or boeuf bourgignon, salads fine herbes, fromages, posset citron and café et thé.

According to Nadia Lamprecht, a local teacher and tour guide, the Lydenburg Bastille Day came to life when the rand-euro, rand-pound exchange rate skyrocketed.

“We had to come up with ideas on how to overcome this sudden change which exceeds the amount the parents had budgeted for while planning during 2015.”

During the event, Lamprecht acknowledged all the organisers.

“We would like to send our appreciation to the residents of Lydenburg and everyone else for helping us make this day a great success.”

The best-dressed award was scooped by Charmain and Tanya Fourie.
