Police warn women against hitch-hiking

Women are warned not to accept lifts from strangers, after a hitch-hiker was raped recently.

Tonga – Local police are searching for three men who picked up a hitch-hiker and raped her several times.

On August 6 at about 17:00, a 25-year-old woman was hiking from Tonga to KaMhlushwa, when a red vehicle accompanied by two men stopped to give her a lift.

It is alleged that the occupant in the back seat, pinned the woman down to prevent her from seeing where they were going.

They stopped in a quiet area, took her into the bush and ordered her to undress. Two other men then joined the suspects.

They all raped the woman twice, loaded her into the car and left her at a village. She then found out from a passer-by that she was in Magogeni Trust.

A case of rape has been opened at Tonga Police Station, however, no arrests have been made yet.

Anyone with information can contact Sgt Joseph Khoza on 072-878-5964.

Police are warning the community not to hitch-hike and accept lifts from strangers. They are urged to make use of public transportation such as buses and taxis as it is safer.
