MBUZINI – Several arrests were made during a surprise operation by the police officers of the Tonga Cluster on Wednesday.
Cluster commander Maj Gen Dorah Xaba announced the operation in the Mbuzini area after her weekly meeting with the eight station commanders under her watch. The station commander does not believe in sitting in the office and led stop-and-searches, patrols and tavern raids.
A 53-year-old woman from Goba Trust was arrested for possession of dagga, while a 27-year-old man from the same area was arrested for possession of a dangerous weapon. A 47-year-old was arrested for brewing sorghum beer. A 31-year-old man was arrested for selling expired food, a contravention of the Health Service Act. The goods were confiscated.
Five taverns were visited and seven vehicles and 80 people were searched.
The community was happy to see high police visibility in their remote area and the cluster commander stated that this would be a routine activity.
Stations that are part of the cluster are Lows Creek, Matsulu, Kaapmuiden, Malelane, Schoemansdal, Tonga, Mbuzini and Komatipoort. The Mananga, Lebombo and Jeppes Reef border posts, as well as the K9 unit, Vehicle Identification Section, Crime Intelligence and Stock Theft Unit, also fall under them.
