LYDENBURG – Lowveld Hikers and Lydenrust Guest Farm are hosting a fun, pet-friendly hike to help Home 4 Paws with much-needed funds and food.
Alison Botha from Lydenrust Guest Farm and Kevin Ruthven came up with this initiative after Alison’s dog, Louie the legend, went missing a month ago following the tri-athletes of the Fullmoon Africa Adventure race. Louie followed them from Lydenrust Guest Farm over the mountain to the Dullstroom Road and then onto the R577. He, unfortunately, never returned home. Alison has been looking for him for over a month but to no avail.
She then went to Home 4 Paws to adopt two of the shelter’s dogs and decided that something had to be done to assist the shelter with day-to-day expenses. Home4Paws is a non-profit, selffunded shelter for stray dogs in town. Owner Cathy Schutte passionately rescues, cares for and attempts to find new homes for the dogs at the shelter.
The pet-friendly hike will cost a mere R50 per dog and all proceeds will be used to pay for veterinary costs. The total amount raised will be posted on Lydenrust’s Facebook page. A donation box will also be available on the day of the hike. Dog food, blankets and doggy toys are desperately needed, and the community’s generosity will aid Home 4 Paws to continue its work.
A fun competition will also be held on the day. There are three categories in which you can enter, this includes bestbehaved dog (please ensure you can control your dog), best lookalike dog and owner and ugliest dog. Free horse trails and hikes are also up for grabs. Bring your four-legged child along, and come enjoy a couple of funfilled hours to help Cathy and the Home4Paws shelter in their time of need.
If you cannot attend and would like to donate to this cause, please feel free to contact Home 4 Paws’s Cathy Schutte on 082-462-5754, or Lydenrust Guest Farm’s Alison Botha on 071-2447-631 or Lowveld Hikers’ Kevin Ruthven on 076-737-3910.
