Interdict granted against striking Wimpy Pretoriuskop staff members

When striking staff members prevented customers from entering the Wimpy at Pretoriuskop in the Kruger National Park and after exhausting several other solutions, the only option left to management at Famous Brands was to apply for an interdict.

SKUKUZA – An interdict was granted against staff striking at the Wimpy in Pretoriuskop in the Kruger National Park on Friday after an application was made for the interdict on Thursday.

Eighteen members of the staff, who are members of the Food and Allied Workers’ Union (FAWU), declared a strike against the franchisee on Thursday. The staff members are currently in negotiations about renumeration with the owner of the franchise in the Kruger National Park (KNP).
Ms Monna Bennett, managing executive of Wimpy, who is part of the franchising group Famous Brands, said to Lowvelder that the interdict was necessary because staff members were preventing customers from entering the premises.
“After the interdict was obtained, staff members were sent home. It was all dealt with in a peaceful way. It is the strikers’ legal right to picket but not to ask our customers to leave or prevent them from entering,” said Ms.
She explained that senior managers from Famous Brands are currently in the Lowveld to manage the problem at Wimpy Pretoriuskop. According to her the restaurant was packed this morning . The staff number and menu is reduced but the restaurant is operational.
“Our apologies to any of our customers in Kruger who have been inconvenienced. Negotiations are ongoing. We hope to solve the problem soon.”
