Residents demand no bail for attack suspect

Marloth Park residents and workers wielded placards and picketed in front of the local Magistrate's Court on Friday morning against bail for a suspect accused of burglary and assault.

KOMATIPOORT –  Several women had been assaulted and robbed in their homes in Marloth Park over the past few months, with many residents suspecting that the same person was involved in multiple crimes.

On February 4 a suspect was arrested and, according to sources, positively linked to some of the cases. Police are continuing investigations.

The suspect appeared in court on Friday and in solidarity with victims of the attacks, Marloth Park residents gathered and marched to the court, bearing placards. They prayed, chanted and waved signs bearing slogans like, “Stop sexual assault”, “We want justice today”, “No bail” and “Stop criminals running free”.

The case was postponed to April 7 and the suspect was remanded in custody.
