Organisation conducts peaceful march to RCL Foods

Community members from all over Nkomazi gathered at RCL Foods' Mhlatikop entrance on Tuesday morning to talk to the company's representatives about job opportunities.

MALALANE – A rare, successful peaceful march was conducted from the N4 to RCL Foods’ Sugar and Milling Division’s Mhlatikop entrance on Tuesday morning.

Practical and Radical Economic Transformation South Africa (Pret SA) rallied people from all over Nkomazi to join their cause.

Dozens of minibuses dropped people off at the Malalane Gate turn-off, with a whole fleet of police and other emergency and security services on stand-by.

Police and other authorities monitored the peaceful protest that kicked off next to the N4.

According to Col Mtsholi Bhembe of Mpumalanga SAPS, the protest action remained a silent, disciplined march and no incidents were reported.

The group met with RCL Foods’ representatives about employment opportunities for locals and listened to the company’s plans in this regard, before dispersing.

“When the police are deployed, we have to be ready for any eventuality, so it’s a bonus for us if there is no violence,” Bhembe stated.

Pret SA was launched in Evander in June as a civil organisation with the aim to address matters regarding unemployment in Mpumalanga and to unify all organisations and forums working towards that aim.
