DRIEKOP – Modikwa Platinum Mine was left spotless after miners volunteered to clean the premises. This was part of the mine’s annual Clean Modikwa Campaign. This year the initiative ran with the slogan “Good Housekeeping”.The management reiterated that employees, visitors and everyone at Modikwa should strive to keep the environment clean and tidy. The miners started cleaning as early as 06:00. They first assembled at Modikwa Clinic while others commenced at the north shaft and the central plant. They picked up trash, which included plastic bags and takeaway containers. Mine manager, Mthi Mtshengu said they wanted to ensure their surroundings were spotless. “We were conscious of dirt and that is the reason why we brought this initiative to Modikwa. No one wants to work in a dirty area. We were aware that it would take us days to finally ensure the whole mine is clean, but we succeeded today, and we will continue taking good care of our environment,” he said. The general manager encouraged employees to avoid throwing cans out of the windows while driving. “Let’s not only keep the mine clean, but also the roads, our homes and towns. When drinking refreshments, do not throw the cans out the windows. Simply put them in refuse bags or throw them in bins,” he added. The mine’s management team also handed out T-shirts and refuse bags to all the stakeholders that participated in the campaign. Hope Tyira, Modikwa’s business area leader for sustainable development, said they aimed to promote environmental awareness. “We must refrain from littering. When you see litter, pick it up. Modikwa cares for the environment. We are also the best in safety and production,” he said.
The mine will host environmental campaigns on a monthly basis, which will ensure Modikwa stays clean.
