UPDATE: Victim of Malalane crash identified as a traffic officer

Two people died and three were injured in an accident on the N4 Toll Road near Malalane on Monday

One of those killed in the accident near Malalane has been identified as a traffic officer. A principal provincial inspector, Joseph Matshabaphala died in the crash on the N4 Toll Road near Malalane on Monday.

“Matshabaphala was killed when his Mercedes Benz collided with a Volkswagen Polo just outside Nkomazi Toll gate.
“The vehicle the officer was driving was hit on the driver’s side during the collision. A case of culpable homicide is being investigated by SAPS.

“Three occupants in the Polo sedan sustained injuries and they are still receiving treatment in hospital,” said Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesman, Joseph Mabuza.

“Matshabaphala was a traffic law enforcement inspector at the head office in the Department. He previously worked at Malelane Cost Centre in Ehlanzeni Region,” said Mabuza.

The MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Pat Ngomane, extended his condolences to the family in a statement.

Mmusi Moeti, spokesman for community safety, security and liaison, said that the accident happened just after the toll gate.
“The collision was between a Mercedes Benz and VW Polo sedan. One of the vehicles was hit from the driver’s side. Three passengers from the VW Polo sedan are currently being treated for injuries at the hospital.The emergency personnel and traffic law enforcement are still at the scene.”
Moeti said that further details will be communicated in due course.
