Blood donars honoured for their contribution
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) held its annual award ceremony to honour those who continuously donate blood to help others.

LYDENBURG – The event was held at Laske Nakke Guest House last Friday.
“Honouring blood donors is a way of thanking them for their selfless act. Thousands of patients will die if we do not have sufficient blood for our daily needs. Currently, on a daily basis, we need 3 000 units of blood and we need about a million units of blood on a yearly basis to be able to meet the demand,” said Kelebogile Kotsedi, SANBS management representative.
According to Kotsedi, less than one per cent of South Africans are blood donors. The blood service is currently left with two and a half days of stock in its fridges. In the next two and half days, the SANBS will not have enough blood to give to hospitals.
Every unit of blood donated, saves a life.
The SANBS thanks each and every donor on behalf of its patients who are able to celebrate yet another birthday.
“There is no factory producing blood, nor is there any substitute for – we solely rely on the goodwill of blood donors.
“We urge eligible blood donors to visit our branches and donate the gift of life,” she added
Donors were treated to plated starters, a buffet dinner, desserts and drinks after the awards ceremony.
The following donors were awarded:
Chris Human, Raymond Rossouw, Ruan van Westhuizen and Willem van Greunen for reaching 20+ milestones.
