Veteran runner offers elders the chance to be fit

"I visit the villages to encourage locals, mostly elders, to exercise at least four times a week. Jogging keeps them young. It has to be a new hobby for the elders."

Fresh from his triumph in the Wildevy trail run a fortnight ago, veteran runner Lazarus Seroka (55) is aiming high.

The former Comrades Marathon winner in the veterans’ category has established a training group for elders.

“I am training elders in the Moroke, Serafa, Ditwaing and Sekhutlong villages. I want to keep them fit and help them in fighting diseases.”

He told Steelburger/Lydenburg News that his love for running and his communities had prompted him to initiate the clubs.

“I visit the villages to encourage locals, mostly elders, to exercise at least four times a week. Jogging keeps them young. It has to be a new hobby for the elders.”

Seroka said he will be hosting a running competition for professional athletes as well as the gogos and madalas.

“There will be a five-kilometre race, a fun walk and run for the elderly. I have also invited former Comrades winners, such as Ludwick Mamabolo, to attend and encourage locals to run and participate in marathons.”

Seroka’s event will be held on August 24, at Ditwaing Village. Interested participants and sponsors can contact him on
