School upgrades a sign of the community’s care
The entire school received some much-needed maintenance, with each classroom overhauled.
Learners at Hananani Primary School recently received two unique new classrooms.
Thornybush Community Projects has been supporting the school for years now. It carries monthly electricity costs, provides Wi-Fi connectivity for the media centre, facilitates different volunteer programmes to assist with aesthetic projects around the school, and provides access to potential donors that can help uplift the school.
One of the biggest challenges facing the school was a shortage of classrooms. After visiting the community, Thornybush Collection guest Joel Andersen and his team in the US decided to convert two old shipping containers into new classrooms.
The donated shipping containers – and all the building materials required to complete this project – were shipped from Seattle in March after almost a year of planning.
The first phase of the project saw a concrete foundation being laid to support the two containers. Andersen and his three volunteers worked tirelessly for an entire week, with five local labourers, to complete this before the second phase of the project was due to commence in June.
Then a further 36 volunteers from the US, as well as 20 local Dixie contractors, converted the two shipping containers into Andersen’s vision of a space of beauty, where children can learn and be inspired.
In addition, the entire school received some much-needed maintenance, with each classroom overhauled.
“The most exciting part of this project is seeing the impact it has already had, and will continue to have on our community.
“We are truly grateful for the vision and determination Andersen had to make this a reality,” said Candice Grover, Thornybush Community project manager. Thornybush Community Projects is a non-profit organisation that believes “Unity is strength.”
Established by the Thornybush Collection, its objectives are nurturing and uplifting the surrounding local communities, from where many staff members come.
Education is of utmost importance to the project and they believe these types of initiatives improve the local community by supporting upskilling, encouraging education and promoting the importance
of working as a community for better lives for all.
