Stats show increase of people driving under the influence of alcohol

Tubatse SAPS is also leading in carjacking cases in the province. There were 36 cases of carjacking opened at the station this year.

BURGERSFORT – There were 196 cases opened at Tubatse SAPS for people driving under the influence of alcohol  in 2019.

This is the sixth highest of such cases in Limpopo. Tubatse SAPS is also leading in carjacking cases in the province. There were 36 cases of carjacking opened at the station this year.

The 2018/19 crime statistics were released last Thursday and show a drastic increase in serious crimes in Limpopo.Among these is an increase of sexual offences reported in the Burgersfort Cluster. A total of 214 cases were reported.

The stations that had reported more sexual cases are Tubatse (69) and Mecklenburg (48). According to the crime statistics, Limpopo saw an increase from 2017/18 to 2018/19 in the following crimes: rape increased from 3 301 to 3 501 cases, murders increased from 911 to 914 cases, common robbery from 2 839 to 2 908 cases.

Stock theft is another crime that is worsening. In 2018, 2 187 cases of stock theft were reported. This year there is an increase to 2 396 cases. In 2018, 5 684 cases were reported for drunken driving. In 2019 it increased to 6 557 cases.

DA’s Limpopo spokesman on community safety, Suzan Phala, said her party was concerned about the high number of rape cases in Limpopo.

“The high number of rapes in the province means that about ten women are raped every day in the province. This is an unacceptably high number, considering that sexual offences such as rape also have a very low reporting rate.”

She said the shocking statistics prove that citizens are not, and do not feel, safe in their homes, as well as on the streets.

“The ruling party is failing to ensure people’s safety. These statistics also explain the public’s loss of faith and confidence in SAPS. The high number of sexual offences in Limpopo is also worrying, considering the shortage of rape kits and the lack of sensitivity and training in the police service to deal with victims of sexual crimes.

“The fact that there are only six social crime prevention programmes and 73 victim empowerment centres and shelters in the province shows that the ANC has failed to offer support in fighting sexual offences.”

Speaking to Steelburger/Lydenburg News, Limpopo SAPS’s spokesman, Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said his department will continue to fight crime in the province.

“There were areas in which the SAPS have improved, but in others we are struggling. “We will work extra hard to ensure people feel safe in the province. We also urge our communities to join the SAPS in fighting crime.”
