FUKUTSU DOJO
The Shotokan Karate Do International of South Africa (SKISA) officially opened a new branch in Lydenburg recently.
The branch, Fukutsu Dojo was launched under the leadership of Sensei Chris Andrews from the International Federation of Funakoshi Shotokan Karate (IFFSK) and took place at the Lydenburg Smelters Hall.
The dojo was put through their paces by Sonny Pillay Hanshi, president of Karate South Africa (KSA), Commonwealth Karate Federation (CKF) and member of the technical board of the World Karate Federation (WKF), to gauge the karatekas’ technical ability.
Pillay said he firmly believes that his visit to Lydenburg was twofold, firstly to give sound direction to the Fukutsu Dojo, and secondly to direct Andrews and his members on a clear path forward given that they recently resigned from the IFFSK.
“This is to encourage karateka to engage in KSA national activities and give senior karate instructors of the Lydenburg district the opportunity to qualify as national referees. My view is that there are exciting times ahead for Andrews and the SKISA karateka.”
Andrews said he is extremely honoured to be training alongside a true karate master such as Hanshi, and that he is excited to be involved with SKISA organisation to promote karate to the underprivileged communities through the SKISA Trust.
“Bringing karate to the less fortunate is our passion in life and SKISA can provide a greater platform for this”
