Sanlam Cancer Challenge

The Lowveld SAGES senior golfers held their annual Sanlam CANSA fundraising day at Lydenburg Golf Club last Thursday.

The senior golfers spent the day competing for prizes awaiting the winners.

According to Pauline Moller of CANSA Nelspruit, the Sanlam Cancer Challenge golfer’s tournament has been held every year for the past 27 years to raise funds in aid of the organisation.

“I would like to thank the Lydenburg Club and CANSA Nelspruit for making this event a success, and Nico Cross for all his hard work and dedication and his motivation every year to make it huge success.”

Participating golfers had the opportunity to win prizes through ruffle draws. Some household items, such as chairs and cooler boxes, were auctioned to raise more funds.

The oldest golfer of the day was Theo Scheepers (83) from Mbombela and was awarded a token for participating.

Sanlam and CANSA have partnered in the running of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge since 1993, a tournament that aims to raise R2,5 million a year for the prevention of cancer and for patient care in South Africa. The tournament is played nationally on an annual basis and is the largest amateur golf tournament in South Africa.

CANSA, a community driven and volunteer-based organisation, has been helping to save lives for the past 77 years.

Started in 1931 by a group of medical professionals concerned about the high incidence of cancer, CANSA has grown to become one of the leading cancer NGOs in the country.

Over 40 000 golfers play in more than 800 club competitions held around the country in support of CANSA. Regional competitions were hosted from March to June 2010, with the finalists qualifying for the Sanlam Cancer Challenge final to be held on October 25 and 26 at the sought-after golfing destination of Gary Player Country Club in Sun City.
