Highlands College expanding into a high school
She also said that they are aiming for a 100 per cent pass rate in matric in the upcoming years. "This can be achieved by ensuring that the students who enter the FET phase (grade 10, 11 and 12) have been with the school from before or at the latest, grade 10."
BURGERSFORT – Highlands College Burgersfort has opened up a high school in Aloe Ridge West this year.
As one passes by on the main road to Lydenburg, one sees that phase one, which was completed in January of this year, is currently in operation. The primary school was registered with the Department of Education in 2016. The high school, which will now be called Highlands High, received their EMIS number (schools registration number) on October 25. The EMIS number is 996602113. They were approved by the Department of Education to offer grade eight to 12 classes at their new buildings.

The school is currently hard at work with the second phase of the new buildings. The building is scheduled to be completed in January 2020. The new building consists of seven more classrooms at the bottom and will have a physical science laboratory, a life sciences laboratory, a computer laboratory and an examination hall on the top floor. Highlands High offers subjects in the commercial and science streams.

Both Highlands College and Highlands High are determined to provide quality education as well as protection to its learners. Surveillance cameras were installed on both premises to ensure discipline at all times. Both schools also have fully air-conditioned classrooms, which have been proven to help students study better in the extremely hot Burgersfort area.
“We saw a need to have another high school in the Burgersfort area, as the number of primary schools far exceeds that of high schools. We conducted research and most locals hinted that there were far too few independent high schools locally. This has led to pupils being congested in classes. Parents were worried that their children are not getting the attention they deserve,” said the principal, Zanele Sibanda.
She also said that they are aiming for a 100 per cent pass rate in matric in the upcoming years. “This can be achieved by ensuring that the students who enter the FET phase (grade 10, 11 and 12) have been with the school from before or at the latest, grade 10.”

“Construction for our third building, which will have more classes, a very large school hall and an AstroTurf (on the third floor) will begin during the course of the 2020 school year,” said director, Fatima Mahomed.
Highlands High School is registered with the Limpopo Department of Education under the Sekhukhune District in the Bogwasha circuit. The school’s physical address is Erf no: 2204, Aloe Ridge East Burgersfort, Extension 21.
Admissions at Highlands College and Highlands High for 2020 are currently open. Pupils from grade R to grade nine can register at either the primary or the high school’s offices. For more information on registrations, contact the school on 013-231-7910 or
082-567-0202. Those interested can also visit the school during weekdays between 14:30 and 15:30.
“The closing date for registrations are dependent on the class lists, which, for the primary schools, are almost full. The high school has seen an influx from surrounding local areas, however, there is still space available because of the open classes in the upcoming building,” said Ingrid Morena, the admissions coordinator.
