DCM hands over multipurpose sports courts to schools

"This positive sporting influence will provide both hope and purpose to the children of this community and the surrounding schools who will be able to use this facility," Monyela said.

STEELPOORT – Access to sport in Tubatse received a major boost when Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine, in partnership with Boleng Trust, handed over multipurpose sport facilities to Seokgome Secondary School in Stocking and Shorwane Secondary School at Ga Maepa village.

DCM’s Pius Monyela officially hands over the multipurpose sport court to Jonas Mahladisa.

In July this year, the two schools were victorious in the DCM soccer tournament hosted by the mine at Kgahlanong Secondary School, for which they were rewarded with the facilities.

The mine officially handed the court to Seokgome’s delighted principal, Jonas Mahladisa. The mine also gave soccer balls to all the pupils at the school.

Two multipurpose courts were erected at Shorwane and Seokgome schools.

DCM’s Pius Monyela said this is to encourage participation in sport across the Sekhukhune area, so that all learners have the opportunity to participate in sport at all levels.

The pitch built at Shorwane Secondary School.

“With the new multipurpose court, learners will be able to play soccer, netball, basketball, volleyball and tennis. This is in a bid to drive the development of sports and healthy activities in and around the surrounding communities.

Phumzile Mabuza, Tebogo Mohlahlo, Virginia Nkosi and Jabulile Ngele also received soccer balls.

“It is well documented that playing sport contributes to making a significant difference in the lifestyle and behaviour of children.

This positive sporting influence will provide both hope and purpose to the children of this community and the surrounding schools who will be able to use this facility,” Monyela said.

Mahladisa, the principal, added, “Our school is honoured and proud to be the recipient of this first-ever multipurpose sport court in this area, and we sincerely thank the stakeholders for their investment into the youth and people of this community.”

He said they will cherish and protect the new sports facility.

Timothy Mamaila, who was among the best players for Seokgome, said the Dwarsrivier soccer tournament unearthed talent from the deep rural villages.

“I got an opportunity to train with the Orlando Pirates junior teams. I will also attend trials with some of the professional local sides.

“We thank the mine for this platform to showcase our talents. We were thrilled with the set-up and how the tourney unfolded. I am also glad our school has won the multi-purpose court.”
