Samancor confirms its first Covid-19 case

The mine has stopped  its operations in order to disinfect all areas.

STEELPOORT – Another Covid-19  coronavirus case has been recorded at the mines outside Steelpoort.

This is the third case in less than a week at the local mines.

Samancor Chrome management confirmed in a statement that one of their employees has tested positive for the Covid-19.

” I would like to inform you that the first positive case in Samancor Chrome has been reported at Tubatse Alloys (TAS) yesterday afternoon (May 8).

“The situation was handled in line with the company’s Covid-19 SHEQ policy to ensure that the risk to the rest of our employees is minimised. We have immediately commenced contact tracing in order to determine who the person was in close contact with. These individuals have been cautioned and their situation will be dealt with in line with the Department of health’s guidelines, ” CEO of Samancor Chrome Limited, Desmond McManus  revealed in a letter directed to the employees.

The mine has stopped  its operations in order to disinfect all areas.

A miner has tested positive at Samancor.

According to McManus all regulatory departments have been informed and a site visit with the department of health has already taken place.

Samancor warned their employees not to report for duty if they have Covid-19 symptoms.

” We once again wish to emphasize that you shouldn’t report for work if you have any of the Covid-19 symptoms or, if you were in contact with someone who is at risk or who displays symptoms associated with Covid-19.”
