Entrepreneur of the week: Nombulelo Mgwenya

What started as a side show selling chilli chips while still in high school, has turned into a fully registered chilli sauce business for Nombulelo Mgwenya (26).

Born and raised in KaBokweni, the young hard-working and dedicated entrepreneur has grown her own chilli sauce business in the Lowveld over the years, selling her delicious product at various markets across Mbombela.

Mgwenya said that following high school and her stint selling chilli chips, she realised she had more of an interest in making a special chilli sauce, rather than just selling chips with sauce, and started the research on what ingredients could be used before finally producing her own, unique brand.

“I started this business because I have an interest in cooking. I wanted to have my own brand as well as inspire other young people. She said she makes the sauce from her home and sells it door-to-door as well as at local markets. Mgwenya said she uses the freshest ingredients to make her spicy sauce brand, including paprika and garlic in the mix, among other organic additives.

She added that the profits from her business are going towards building her mother a house, as well as a shop to run her business from.

“I would also like to supply big shops like Pick n Pay and Shoprite in the future.”

She said the Mbombela community has been a massive supporter of her small business and she has gained many local customers over the years. She said she was eternally grateful for the continued support.
