An evening for the CANSA debutantes
Melissa Young thanked this year's CANSA debutantes from Hoërskool Nelspruit and Uplands College for their incredible community service during 2021.

Having started in 1988, being part of the CANSA Debutantes has become an institution that encourages learners to reach out and give back to their communities.

The annual CANSA Mpumalanga Debutante Ball was recently hosted at The Greek Kouzina. It was an evening to recognise the hard work debutantes have put in over the last year.

Melissa Young of CANSA explained that there are about four to five high schools that usually get together and raise funds for the organisation. This year, however, there were fewer schools due to Covid-19.

“You have different boys and girls (aged 16 and 17) representing their schools as a debutante or ambassador,” said Young. A list is kept of what these learners do throughout the year and the best achievers are then awarded at the ball.

Young thanked this year’s participants from Hoërskool Nelspruit and Uplands College for their incredible community service during 2021.

“Thank you, Dr Eurika Mogane-Jones, for your inspirational speech to our debutantes and ambassador and thank you to our amazing sponsors and service providers.

Gerhard Oosthuizen of Hoërskool Nelspruit was the overall winning debutante for the year, having raised a staggering R46 700. The runner-up was Hanneke Brits of the same school with R25 016.05. The second runner-up was Claudia Klesse of Uplands College with R22 833.50.

Hanneke also received the CANSA Service Delivery Award while Gerhard and Claudia both received Best Achiever Awards.
