Suspects ambush CIT van in Barberton, but leave without money

Two civilians were injured during a cash-in-transit robbery at Shoprite Barberton on Monday April 4.

An elderly woman was shot in the chest, while a male civilian’s face was grazed by a bullet in a cash-in-transit heist at the Shoprite in Barberton today, April 4 at 13:10.

Five suspects ambushed the CIT vehicle guards while at Shoprite and a shoot-out ensued.

The woman was shot in the chest by a stray bullet and was rushed to a nearby hospital in a critical condition.

The CIT guards had already dropped some money into the Shoprite safe. When they returned to the vehicle with an empty trunk to collect more cash, the suspects pounced.

After the shoot-out, they made their getaway with an empty trunk and a service pistol belonging to a guard. The suspects’ getaway vehicle is reportedly a grey BMW.

The police are investigating the matter. No arrests have yet been made.
