What is the purpose of taxes?

Taxation - especially in South Africa - is a sore point in many formal and informal discussions.

Why do we pay taxes?

It is to, among other things, enable government to build and develop infrastructure, and provide services like water, electricity, school and medical facilities. It is a key element and result of, or, if you want, a social contract between the citizens and government.

If you visit the SARS website, it will indicate more than 20 different instances in which citizens pay tax, not always simultaneously, but yes, certainly at some point in time.
