WATCH: Lioness visits hole 3 at Skukuza Golf Club

Golfers at the Kruger National Park course are no strangers to wildlife, but an afternoon predator on the fairways always demands respect.

Skukuza Golf Club, known as the wildest golf course in the world, lived up to its reputation when a lioness was spotted on hole three yesterday, October 29, after 13:00. SANParks commercial events manager Hein Grobler was on his way to the clubhouse when he saw the big cat.

“She was alone and I kept a safe distance from her,” he said. He added that sightings such as these do not occur every day. “The only predictable thing about nature is that it is unpredictable,” he said.

The lioness had spent the afternoon drinking water and exploring the course.

Big cat returns to tee box

Grobler immediately alerted colleagues to ensure the safety of staff and visitors on the course. Later that day, while playing a round of golf himself, he was surprised to see the lioness again, making herself comfortable on the tee box.

Grobler has worked in the Kruger National Park since he was 19 and has captured videos of unique sightings across the reserve. He also took the famous video of two lionesses that caught an impala beside the club’s restaurant and dragged it onto the green. Minutes later a crocodile unexpectedly chased the lions away and claimed the prey for itself.
