Trucks blocking Lebombo border cleared

According to the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the reason for the blockade is unknown, but the situation is being monitored.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi, said that the trucks blockading the road to the Lebombo Border Post have been cleared.

He said that while the department is unsure as to why some trucks drivers had decided to block off the road, the issue was exacerbated by other truck drivers who became impatient with the delays and moved into the oncoming lane in order to approach the border.

He said the blockade was cleared by traffic police at around 10:00 this morning, November 11.

“Truck drivers know the rules of the road and know they are supposed to stick to their designated lanes,” said Mmusi.

He said that the department would continue to engage with both truck owners and drivers surrounding the issue, especially since the festive season is around the corner.

“We need co-operation from drivers and owners. When the road is blocked or backlogged due to non-compliance with the rules of the road, it affects not only the road users but local businesses as well.

“We cannot continue to pull traffic officers away from where they have been stationed to manage truck drivers who not adhering to the rules of the road.”
Mmusi said the department would continue to monitor the situation.
