Candles lit in commemoration of World Aids Day in Lydenburg

World Aids Day is recognised across the globe as a means of raising awareness of the disease and its continued impact.

Thaba Chweu Local Municipality hosted a special event at the Lydenburg Civic Centre on Friday. Remembrance was observed for those who had passed away due to the pandemic, and candles were lit.
HIV/Aids is not just a health issue, but a social, developmental and economical one that needs both proactive and reactive multisectoral strategies.

The goal of the day was to unite people in the fight against HIV/Aids, to show support to people living with HIV, and to commemorate those who had lost their lives due to it.
The Department of Health had stations to test for HIV and other diseases such as tuberculosis and high blood pressure.
People living with HIV are at a much greater risk of developing active TB once infected, which increases as the degree of immune suppression increases.
