100 bicycles donated to schoolchildren at Mohlarutse

The department allocated a total of 1 400 bicycles to Limpopo for the 2023/24 financial year.

Travelling almost 5km to school on foot, will be a thing of the past for some of the learners at Ga-Madiseng village outside Burgersfort. One hundred pupils of Mohlarutse Secondary School were donated bicycles and helmets on Monday.

The donations are thanks to the National Department of Transport through the Shova Kalula Bicycle programme.

This initiative has provided low-cost mobility solutions to learners since 2001.So far, over 100 000 bicycles have been distributed to the learners in rural areas and townships.

The pupils were excited to receive the gifts.

“The goal of the department is to provide a fleet of one million bicycles to pupils countrywide who walk a distance of 3km to school.
“The programme has been rolled out annually in order to reach the one million target,” said the departmental spokesperson, Tshegofatso Maake.

Handing over the bicycles at Mohlarutse, was local Cllr Sam Makutu, accompanied by the Tubatse SAPS, and the school management team.

“We are excited with the donations, as this will help our kids to access education. Gone are days they will walk miles to reach their schools. We urge them to take good care of the bicycles and to complete their studies.”
