EFF demands service delivery action from TCLM

The party said that the municipality has 14 work days to respond to the service delivery issues being addressed in the memorandum the party handed over to the speaker of TCLM.

“Then we burn…”

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) arrived the offices of the Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) and conducted a peaceful protest on Thursday, March 22.

Hundreds of EFF supporters clamoured around the building of the municipality in an attempt to gain the attention of management.

When the crowd began making its way to the municipal building, a heavy police presence was already in place.

The gates around the municipal building were locked to prevent any trespassing on the property.

The EEF said that its main aim was to hand over a memorandum concerning grievances experienced by the community, specifically the lack of service delivery.

One of the members told the newspaper that the party is sick of receiving the same song sung by the TCLM every time service delivery is addressed.

“They don’t care. There are people without water, and other areas in the Mashishing experience frequent water outages lasting for days on end. In Sabie the water is contaminated with E.coli and in areas like Marikana the water has been off for months.”

Members also said that other grievances included developing a strategic plan to pave all the roads in the township and Mashishing location.

“Potholes have to be fixed. Our roads are in a state of disrepair. Potholes, cracks in the tar, and the collapsed road surface are not becoming a huge safety issue.”

The EFF also said that the state of the sewer system has devastating environmental health issues. “Our rivers are polluted by the sewage spills.”

It also said that interrupted power supply is causing damage to appliances and disrupting businesses. “We demand that the TCLM provides a stable and reliable electric supply.”

The party said that it expects the TCLM to take immediate action to address the concerns as set out in the memorandum.

It said that it will issue the municipality with 14 work days to address the issues as set out in the memorandum.

The memorandum of demands was handed over to the speaker of the TCLM, Cllr Herman Trower.

The newspaper asked one of the protestors near the gate what would happen should these demands by the party not be met. Flicking his red beret the party member quietly whispered; “Then we burn…”
