Kruger’s gold: Game rangers protecting SA’s most valuable resource

Among increasing pressure from the South African public about funding for anti rhino poaching efforts and efforts to protect these animals, Lowvelder investigates the complexities of Kruger's rhino wars.

NELSPRUIT – As of March 31 this year, the number of rhino killed by poachers in the Kruger National Park (KNP) alone stood at 153.  And while an increasingly concerned South African public watches and waits to see if 2014’s slaughter will reach the same epic proportions as the 1004 in total for the preceding year, a relatively small army of men and women are currently all that stands between the animals and Asia’s greed.

Through a series of articles, Lowvelder will shed light on the complex nature of this, Kruger’s Rhino wars, waged on a daily basis in a physically hostile conservation area with limited resources and against an enemy that is armed, continually evolving, determined and follows no rules.

Journalists were taken to the carcass of a White Rhino calf to see how post-mortem procedures are conducted.
