Government intends to reduce speed limits drastically

Goods vehicles above 9000kg GVM to be banned from public roads during peak travelling times (06:00 to 09:00 and 17:00 to 20:00).

MBOMBELA – Motorists may soon have to adapt to new regulations on the roads as the Minister of Transport gazetted new proposed speed limits, amongst others.

These regulations include:

  • Driving 40 km/h, applied to every public road, or section thereof, situated within an urban area.
  • driving 80 km/h on every public road, or section thereof, other than a freeway, outside an urban area.
  • Drving 120 km/h on freeways – provided that a speed limit of 100 kilometres per hour applies in cases where a freeway passes through a residential area.

The draft regulations furthermore suggested that:

  • Drivers are to be re-evaluated when renewing licences
  • Workers being transported on the back of a bakkie may not exceed five
  • School children not to be transported on the back of a bakkie
  • Goods vehicles above 9 000kg GVM to be banned from public roads during peak travelling hours
