Sanral has completed the first section of the refurbishment of the R23, the company announced today.
A major route connecting Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal, it will be rehabilitated in two parts.
The R1 billion upgrades are meant to increase the freedom of movement for all road users, Sanral says.
Its restoration involves the strengthening, widening and resurfacing of the existing road.
The road also features enhancements to improve pedestrian safety.

Project manager for Sanral, Mr Riaan Oerlemans says accidents have decreased.
“There has been a remarkable improvement in the mobility of the vehicles using the road as well as a decrease in accidents involving both motorists and pedestrians,“ he says.
“Unfortunately, engineering cannot change driver behaviour and we remind our road users that speed kills.”
