MBOMBELA – The Save the ANC Mpumalanga campaign will make a decision on whether to approach the courts to postpone the planned provincial elective conference later this week.
It was supposed to be held in 2016, but was moved to this October when the provincial general council resolved to do so in March.
Mr Sipho Monareng, one of the organisers, said the party’s national executive committee (NEC) could not meet with them on Friday, as planned, to address their concerns, as their meeting with the provincial executive committee (PEC) took longer than expected. “Our meeting was postponed, to a date to be confirmed,” Monareng said.
The movement staged a protest on the ANC’s provincial offices in July, claiming its grievances had not been addressed internally.
It was escalated to Luthuli House, which didn’t respond until the campaign threatened to approach the courts to try and postpone the conference.
The group argued that the decisions to move it forward and approving a third term for the chairman, Mr David Mabuza, were invalid as they were taken by delegates, not mandated by branches to represent them.
Monareng said they could not wait another three weeks to hear from the NEC, and would meet before Thursday to decide whether they would continue with their court action or continue to wait for a meeting.
Provincial secretary, Mr Luck Ndinisa said the PEC wouldn’t comment on the matter, as they were still busy with the internal processes. An announcement was expected early next week.
