Mpumalanga’s DG leaves as premier is expected to return

The provincial executive council announced yesterday that Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize's contract will not be renewed.

MBOMBELA – If he is given the all clear by his doctor, Mpumalanga premier, Mr David Mabuza, will reclaim his status as the province’s first citizen next week.

Mabuza’s extended sick leave may end on Tuesday. His office says he is expected back at work after 10 weeks of rest.

He was booked off on doctor’s orders for fatigue. This will happen “provided his doctors are fully satisfied with his condition”.

His spokesman issued a statement earlier this week, saying Mabuza had felt there was a need to extend his recuperation period.

“He says he forgives all those who spread the rumours that he had died and calls on them to be supportive, caring and loving to other people and their families.”

Also this week it was announced that the director-general had vacated her position.

The provincial government’s executive council stated on Thursday that the three-year contract of Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize will not be renewed.

It was due to end on November 30, but ended on Tuesday “after a mutual agreement between her and the employer”, since she had a number of leave days available.

The council “commended Mkhize for uniting the provincial administration including the municipalities and wished her well on her future endeavours”.
Health MEC Mr Gillion Mashego wouldn’t say why her contract will not be renewed.

“We appreciate that she did very well in uniting the administration and municipalities. Exco is very happy with her performance. There is nothing more we can say.”

He said acting premier, Mr Vusi Shongwe, came to the agreement with Mkhize.

Mkhize confirmed “that through mutual consent the contract will not be renewed”.

Deputy director-general for macro policy and planning in the Office of the Premier, Mr Thulani Mdakane, will act as DG until a replacement is appointed.
